“Chattahoochee” Explained: Just What Exactly Is a Hoochie Coochie?

“Chattahoochee” is one of Alan Jackson’s biggest hits to date. Country fans know that song immediately when the guitar chord starts.

Alan was actually reluctant to put it out, because he didn’t know if people would relate. In fact, even Waylon Jennings asked him the famous question everyone wants to know, “what the hell is a Chattahoochee?”

Well, it’s a river on the border of Georgia and Alabama. That’s it. The song also raises an even bigger question. Which is…what’s a hoochie coochie? As in, “It gets hotter than a hoochie coochie”.

Here’s the answer, directly from songwriter Jim McBride. He said , “a hoochie coochie is a county fair strip show”.
