Damn. This is a fine remake of an already great song.
Thanks to YouTube in showing me another “new” old song. “Wildfire” was written by Michael Murphey and Larry Cansler. It’s a damn good classic country song and it’s one of those songs you can’t help but try to sing along with when you hear it. It always makes me want go out in that blizzard to find that horse named, “Wildfire”.
The song was originally recorded by Michael Martin Murphey, who had yet to add his middle name to his recorded work, and appears on his gold-plus 1975 album, ‘Blue Sky – Night Thunder’. Thank God he stated using his middle name, because people in country music that use three names means business to me.
This new version of “Wildfire” popped up on my YouTube feed and I’m here for this. Cody Johnson teamed up with Mr. Murphey for an updated record version of this classic and I’ll be listening this on repeat for the foreseeable future.
I’ve heard COJO do classic country covers of “Long Haired Country Boy”, “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”, “Whoever’s In New England”, “When I Call Your” and now he’s on this song. The man’s covers are flawless and he’s got enough under his belt to record an EP at the least. Put that out Cody. I’ll buy multiple copies of that too.
