Finding a Father’s Day gift idea can be a lot harder than a Mother’s Day gift. But Dads…whatever you got…even if it was just a phone call, or nothing at all…is probably better than this.
A news report over the weekend weighed the “potential risks and rewards” of gifting DNA test kits for Father’s Day. A DNA test is not necessarily a paternity test…but if your dad isn’t expecting it, it does have Maury Povich-vibes.
The “potential rewards” are: It could seem like a “unique and fun gift idea” . . . one of those things someone might like, but wouldn’t buy for themselves. And “exploring family history” can be fun and inspiring.
But there are a lot of downsides, like uncovering secrets that are sad and unsettling, such as “misattributed paternity.” And “once they’re known…they cannot be unknown.” There are also legitimate concerns about data security.
So, should DNA kits be given as gifts? One expert says, “no”.
