George Strait Is Giving Us A Cover Of Waylon Jennings’ “Waymore’s Blues” On His New ‘Cowboys And Dreamers’ Album

This is further proof that prayers do in fact get answered.

King George Strait is finally giving us what we’ve wanted for years now (well specifically me), and that’s an official recorded studio version of Waylon Jennings’ “Waymore’s Blues”, which he’s done at his shows for quite some time now. We shouldn’t have to say this, but it’s obviously the best cover of the classic Waylon song that you’ll ever hear.

Waylon first released the song on his 1975 album Dreaming My Dreams, and George sings the hell out of it at his show. Seeing the King actually putting out a studio recording of it fills my heart, and it will be on repeat come September.

George is about to release his 31st studio album called Cowboys and Dreamers September 6th, and I am not patently waiting. The album will also include a duet with Chris Stapleton called “Honky Tonk Hall Of Fame”, and features writers Dean Dillon, Monty Criswell and even George’s son, Bubba Strait.

George is also dedicating this new album to his longtime manager Erv Woolsey, longtime fiddle player Gene Elders (“Amarillo By Morning” will never be played the same without him) and longtime road manager Tom Foote, who all passed away this year and were close friends.

“I’m dedicating this record to my longtime manager and friend Erv Woolsey and my longtime fiddle player and friend Gene Elders (a player on four of these tracks), who we lost on the same day, March 20, 2024, as well as my longtime friend and road manager Tom Foote, who we lost on April 29, 2024.

I will never forget all of the good times we had together. May they rest in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Texas icon already released the lead single “MIA Down in MIA” last Friday (May 17th), which is Strait’s first single that he’s put out in nearly three years. September 6th can’t get her soon enough.
